I've always felt a little awkward about celebrating Independence Day. When America won its freedom from England it was a great day. However, black people were still slaves. Can I really celebrate a day when my ancestors were not freed? On the other hand, it is a day that unites the country. It is not a religious observance for a specific group. It is a day that everyone who lives in the U.S. can observe. On top of that, it is a day where we don't have to go to work. That's a good thing. While I will enjoy time with family and participate in lighting fireworks, in the back of my mind I know that July 4th is not really a day of Freedom for all Americans. The Independence Day that every human being can honor is Resurrection Sunday. On that day, Jesus freed everyone from the power of sin and death.
