Authentic Faith Development

Authentic Faith Development Ministries, strives to connect people with God practically to establish a "faith alive" culture of Christian discipleship that will help them realize their God-given purpose and life mission. We will be radically intentional about offering:

  • Personal growth resources and opportunities
  • Transforming spiritual support
  • Engaging connectional events

We do this through Church School, Growth Groups, Bible Studies and special classes that offer life and spiritual skills. Our Senior Pastor, the Rev. Dr. Emanuel Cleaver III believes and teaches that discipleship is less about being and more about doing. This simply means that what matters most is how we serve God as disciples. We also provide opportunities for members new and established to get connected into the life of St. James. I would encourage you to take advantage of the spiritual gifts survey we offer here to gain greater insight into your gifts and graces. Once you have done that, the next step is to explore all of the possibilities that exist here at St. James. We look forward to assisting you on your journey of connecting with God. I am always available to answer questions and point you in the right direction.

Our desire is to see people connected to God through the good news of Jesus Christ. We’re also keen for people to build real connections with each other centered on fellowship with God. This starts as people come along to church and get involved in one of our weekly congregations. But it doesn’t stop here. Real connections are developed as people engage with each other in meaningful relationships. People grow as they learn from God’s word and apply it in their lives. Growth groups provide an important context for people to grow together in living out the implications of the gospel. As people grasp the gospel more and more, so they will be moved to serve God and others with the gifts God has given them.

Growth Groups

Growth focuses on outcomes, not simply inputs.

Growth focuses on outcomes, not simply inputs. A Bible study group can be committed to inwardly digesting the Scriptures, but give no evidence of any fruit of change in people’s lives. The purpose of our groups is to produce change in people and change in our church as we grow together in the likeness of Christ.

Safe Sanctuaries

St. James is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all children, youth and volunteers who participate in ministries and activities sponsored by the church.

Volunteers are an essential and valuable component of the ministries of St. James United Methodist Church. We are committed to preserving this church as a holy place of safety and protection for all who would enter and as a place in which all people can experience the love of God through relationships with others. As such we seek to be a Safe Sanctuary.
